Diversity in academic teaching

Doing justice to all students with their different potentials and perspectives in academic teaching may sometimes present a challenge. Higher education requires teaching concepts and didactic tool that are sensitive to the diversity within students. This means, for example, integrating subject topics that represent marginalised perspectives into teaching as well as creating a good learning environment for students with challenges in accessing academic learning.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin would like to support its faculty members in making their teaching more diverse and inclusive. Therefore, on this page we have compiled a resources that can be help diversify one's teaching.

Info sheet on non-discriminatory teaching

As initial food for thought, we would like to present to you the most important tips from our info sheet on non-discriminatory teaching:

  1. Catering to the different needs of students, especially those with more challenges when it comes to learning, for instance by creating barrier-free access to teaching and learning materials.
  2. Safeguarding that students with children can attend class.
  3. Avoiding comments and assumptions on the appearance, presumed background, gender and origin of students.
  4. Ensuring a respectful atmosphere and interaction between students.
  5. Respecting students' chosen denominations and identification such as names and pronouns.
  6. Creating diversity in the teaching content, such as by integrating varied authors, topics, examples and adopting non-discriminatory language.
