Abstract von Prof. Heffernan:

In this talk I will discuss the ASSISTments project. In 2016, when we still had sanity in the United States Executive Branch, my wife and I were invited to present at the White House on this initiative. Earlier that year, Stanford Research Institute "SRI" an objective evaluation firm, had completed a 3.5 million efficacy trial of ASSISTments. They conducted a medical quality randomized control trial of ASSISTments specifically the intervention was focused on giving students computer supported homework in seventh grade "13 year old" middle school students. SRI reported that ASSISTments increased student learning by 75% over what the amount of learning that a student usually experiences in a year. While I am personally happy that our product has shown to be effective, the really exciting thing is how we have opened this platform to external researchers to perform their own studies. The NSF has funded me to create the www.ASSISTmentstestbed.org to help researchers propose cognitive science studies that are expected to improve student learning. ASSISTments has been used a platform to create 24 peer reviewed randomized controlled trials. Finally in this talk I will describe the educational data mining work that I am known for.
