Georg-Simmel Center for Metropolitan Studies

Urban Research Group

Founded in 2012, the Urban Research Group is self-organized collective of five doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from different disciplinary and institutional backgrounds. The Georg Simmel Centre for Metropolitan Studies provides the platform for this interdisciplinary urban research and its attendant events and publications. The current research foci of the group are urban commons and new developments in critical urban studies. Past events include the conference "Urban Commons: Moving beyond State and Market" in September 2013 and the workshop “Current Developments in Critical Urban Studies” in July 2014. The edited volume “Commons, Moving beyond State and Market” will be released through Birkhäuser Verlag in spring 2015. An edited volume based on the second workshop is planned for winter 2015.
